A Clear Path to Reading Success
If your child is struggling to read, you are not alone and there is a path forward. The Literacy Blueprint provides a clear, structured plan to help your child build strong reading skills, grow in confidence, and experience real success. Through targeted, research-based instruction, I support struggling readers in developing the skills they need to become capable, confident readers.
About Me
Hi, I’m Kathleen McCarthy, a literacy specialist with over 30 years of classroom experience. I’m an IMSE Orton Gillingham certified educator and a New York State certified literacy specialist with a deep passion for the science of reading.
I believe every child can learn to read with the right instruction and support. My approach is structured, explicit, and tailored to each child’s needs, so they feel successful every step of the way. Using a multisensory Orton Gillingham approach, I help children build strong foundational skills in phonemic awareness and phonics, while also developing vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency.
I closely monitor and track each child’s progress, using data to guide instruction and clearly show growth over time. I share this progress with families so you always understand how your child is improving and what comes next. I also believe in working as a team with parents, partnering together to support your child’s success.
In addition to reading, I support students in developing strong handwriting and writing skills, helping them express their ideas with confidence and clarity.
My goal is not just to teach children how to read, but to help them feel confident, capable, and proud of themselves as learners.
Tutoring Services
I provide personalized Orton-Gillingham tutoring both in person (in Westchester County, NY) and online, designed to meet the unique needs of each child. Every student begins with a comprehensive assessment so I can clearly understand their strengths and areas for growth, allowing me to create a targeted plan that leads to real, measurable progress.
I work with learners at all levels, from early readers building foundational skills to students who need more intensive support. I have extensive experience supporting struggling readers, including students with dyslexia, using a structured, multisensory approach that is explicit, systematic, and proven to work.
Each session is carefully designed to build strong skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, while also supporting handwriting and writing development. I closely monitor and track progress, sharing clear, meaningful data with families so you can see your child’s growth over time.
Most importantly, I strive to create a supportive, encouraging environment where children feel successful, build confidence, and begin to see themselves as capable readers. I believe in partnering closely with parents, working as a team to help your child reach their full potential.
